The First Step

Trial Helicopter Instructional Flight

Whether you’re after a rewarding career or maybe you have always wondered what it is like to fly a helicopter, a Trial Introductory Flight is the first step.  It allows you to test run Aeropower as a training provider and it gives us a chance to see if you will fit into our training culture and student mix.

You are about to get behind the controls of an incredible machine. Complicated, demanding but extremely rewarding and a point of pride for those that master it. It is also an amazing adrenalin rush.

You can turn up at just about any airfield and jump straight into an aircraft with an instructor and have an enjoyable and safe flight. However, at Aeropower we like to provide a little more rigour to the process so that you get the most out of it.

After meeting the staff and being shown around the first thing we will take you through is a one-on-one 30 minute briefing on the helicopter flight controls, where they are, what they do and how we manipulate them to get the helicopter to do what we want it to. Any questions that you have at this stage can be gone into in depth.

You will then be taken through the weather, pre-flight paperwork, aircraft familiarisation and a helicopter safety briefing.

Once you are strapped into the helicopter and give the thumbs up you will be off with your Aeropower instructor next to you. Feel the excitement of flying your own helicopter over the picturesque Moreton Bay region and Pacific Ocean in the beautiful Queensland skies.

During the flight you will be introduced to:

  • Hand over – Take over procedures
  • Different checklists
  • Pickup to the hover
  • Hover taxiing of the helicopter
  • A normal takeoff
  • Cruise flight
  • Effects of flight controls
  • Low flying
  • Autorotation – disengaging the engine from the rotor
  • Engine cool down and shutdown procedures
  • Post Flight Debriefing

The post flight debriefing will cover any questions that you have and provide an opportunity to book your next lesson. Your instructor can also complete the flight entry in your logbook if you have one.

The flight lasts for around 40 minutes and the flight time is counted towards either your private or commercial helicopter licence. All up it will take 2 hours to complete.

We encourage all potential students to take a Helicopter Trial Instructional Flight (T.I.F) as their first step.
